Letter to Portugal

In this article, I’d like to deliver a heartfelt message to the country that welcomes me: Portugal! Here’s a declaration of love from a Frenchwoman to Portugal

“Dear Portugal, I met you a few years ago(well, 15 years ago!). I only knew you through the stories of my husband, his family and the photos he showed me. I was immediately attracted by your traditional side and your values based on family, respect and the love of simple things

So I had to go and see you for myself, which I did 7 years ago on vacation in Lisbon. It was time for me to come and discover part of my in-laws’ origins, this country that intrigued me and that I heard so much about

The first moments were very emotional, as I discovered in real life everything I had imagined while listening to my in-laws’ stories

I was so excited to get to know all the places where Greg spent his vacations as a child, to see the environment in which his family lived, and to discover you little by little, dear Portugal

Since that first meeting, I’ve come back every year and even several times. Why did you come? Because I felt so at home with you, dear Portugal

Until the day we decided to take the plunge and settle in your country. We bought a vacation home to show you off to family and friends who didn’t yet know you

All the signs were there that we wanted to live with you

Today, I’ve been here for several months and I’m enjoying every moment of it: meeting new people, the pleasant weather, learning Portuguese, the kindness of your people, your beautiful cuisine, walks on the beach, freedom, safety, a warm welcome, helping each other… Everything we came here for

I, the Frenchwoman in Portugal, am proud to live in your country, and I’m proud of you because you’ve weathered crises with strength and courage, you’ve taken the decisions needed to restore your situation, and you’ve kept your people in harmony

So thank you for welcoming me dear Portugal, thank you for sharing so many beautiful values and thank you for who you are!”
