Why not buy a wooden house in Portugal?
When we talk about wooden houses, we all imagine a chalet in the mountains, but that’s not really what they are! Wooden modular homes are similar to traditional houses. Only the structure is made of wood, but the “shell”, as I like to call it, is not necessarily made of wood. I’m sure you’ve walked past a wooden house without knowing that it was a wooden house! Wooden modular homes offer a number of advantages, which we’ll cover in this article.
Energy savings
Wooden modular homes offer excellent soundproofing and thermal insulation!
The structure of your home is made of wood, to which insulation is attached to avoid thermal bridges and give your home a high level of energy performance, with limited air intake and excellent airtightness. Ecological par excellence, wood is a naturally high-performance material, delivering results 12 times better than concrete.
With a wooden modular home, you can reduce your energy consumption by 20% to 30% compared with a traditional house, and you can further increase these savings with the use of photovoltaic panels, for example.

Attractive price
Modular wooden houses are approximately 20% less expensive than conventional houses at the time of construction, a significant reduction that can be very attractive!
Rapid construction
Wooden modular homes can be built quickly. A modular home is built in a workshop and delivered as a kit, which reduces construction time.
All exterior joinery (windows, doors, etc.) is assembled in the workshop. Finished products are transported to your plot, where they are assembled in just a few days. You save months on the delivery of your home, compared with a traditional breeze-block or brick house. What’s more, with a workshop, you’re not dependent on the weather or weather-related delays.

An “ecological” site
Building a wooden modular home generates less waste than a conventional house. The wooden structure reduces environmental impact. What’s more, 65% less waste is generated on site, and 80% less water is consumed, since much of the work is carried out in the workshop, as mentioned above.

Aesthetic flexibility
As I said in the introduction, having a wooden house doesn’t mean your home will look like the Ingalls family cottage from “Little House on the Prairie”.
Timber-frame walls offer a choice of exterior finishes. The three most popular are:
- cladding(a cottage-style wood finish),
- rendering(similar to a “normal” house)
- mixed(for the undecided 🙂).
The modular wooden house can therefore have several styles, depending on your choice of finish. The same goes for the roof, with many companies offering different roof finishes: flat or terraced roofs, steel trough roofs, or traditional multi-sloped roofs (please note that this will also depend on the requirements of your town’s local urban development plan).
